To quote President Johnson in 1965:
…But about this there can and should be no argument. Every American citizen must have the right to vote…
…It is wrong – deadly wrong – to deny any of your fellow Americans the right to vote in this country. There is no issue of States’ rights or National rights. There is only the struggle for human rights.”
IF YOU DID NOT VOTE EARLY,
PLEASE REMEMBER TO
VOTE TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2012.
Sincerely,
COAL Board of Directors

VOTING RIGHTS
Terri Johnson

Minority communities across the nation are being targeted in many ways this election season with the goal of limiting our access to the polls.

The grandfather clauses and literacy tests of yesteryear have been replaced by photo id requirements and proof of citizenship laws.

The Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has created an interactive map detailing what is happening throughout the nation.  We must pay attention to what is going on.

In Illinois today, only those who registered by mail and did not provide required id with that application, must bring one of the following to the polls:

  • A current & valid Photo ID;
  • Utility bill;
  • Bank statement;
  • Government check;
  • Paycheck; or
  • Government Document.

Legislation was introduced in February, 2011 in both houses that would require everyone voting to provide a government issued form of identification.
