Shame on our State Legislators

As of this writing, only 21 candidates have filed to fill 10 elected school board seats, across the 10 elected representative school board districts. No candidate has yet filed in the 8th District and in two others only one candidate has filed. With end of day Monday being the last day to file to get on the November 5th Ballot, let’s hope that more candidates will file.

School Board Candidates List

We want more choices to select from to fill the portion of the school board that will be directly responsible to voters. We need school board members who bring educational, financial, legal, planning, process improvement, strategic planning, school administration, and other skills to the table. We need candidates who will provide the depth of vision and oversight required to improve the state of the educational system in Chicago, a system with looming deficits and more importantly, is not providing the quality of learning our children need and deserve, nor provisioning a learning environment in an equitable manner for all students regardless of zip code or family income.

Please read on; following is a short commentary on the shame our state legislators should feel in making it harder for school board candidates to make the ballot, an article on what happens if a district has no candidates at the end of the filing (and challenge) period, and finally, included here is a message for candidates still valiantly gathering signatures sufficient to both file on Monday and to stave off a challenge from special interests.

Respectfully,

COAL Board of Directors
